Preparation
Print out of key vocabulary in English, approximately 20.
Have wrapped lollies
Create a layered pass-the-parcel which also include the vocabulary. See below for example.
Powerpoint presentation with key vocabulary and revision.
Act 1. Revise prior learning. Using a ball, I threw asked the question and the student who caught it must answer. For some unknown reason, throwing the ball and allowing a student to hold it has always led to higher rates of in target language response, and willingness to answer.
Act 2. Introduce new language item. As above, using the ball to circulate around the room.
Act 3. Pass the parcel on the floor in a circle.
Act 4. Reflection and feedback.
•Music will start. The parcel is to be passed around.
•When the music stops, the person may open the .
•It will reveal a “gift” (image of an item), and you will need to state whether or not it is suitable for you in Indonesian.
•“Hadiah ini cocok/tidak cocok untuk saya karena …”
•“Yang lebih cocok untuk saya adalah…”
•If you are able to answer this clearly, you may keep the permen.
•Every person gets a turn. If you have already had a turn, pass it on to the next person.
Student Feedback
My questions were:
1.Give 1-5 stars if you liked this activity
2.Give 1-5 stars if it helped you achieve the learning intention for this session. Why/why not?
3.Can we improve this activity?
"1. 4
2. 5, It did help with the learning intention. Everyone saying it burned it into my brain
3. More lollies will make people more crazy so no don't change anything"
4 star
because i know how to say yes and no to presents in Indonesia so random people don't give random gifts to me. i gave it a 4 because some people weren't being productive and playing it correctly.
5 stars
5 it did help me with my learning, this helped me to learn how to say things in sentences and I learnt how to say new things, I think it would've been better if there were more layers so that there were more words to revise."
5 stars it helped
3 stars, because it as fun and you had to speak indo
1. 4 stars
2. 3 stars, Because I actually had to speak to people
3. Adding more lollies ;;;;>>>>>>
4 stars
2 stars, because I only got one turn so I couldn't really repeat what I learnt over and over again and make it stick in my head
I don't know, maybe add layers?
1. 4, because it was fun and i learnt how to say if it was suitable or not for me but it got a bit crazy
2. It helped having to think about it more and put me on the spot a bit more
3. Yes if it lasted shorter so there was just enough for all of us and no more so it doesn't seem like favouritism
1. 4 stars
2. 4 stars yes. it helped us remember how to say whether something is suitable for us or not
3. pass it between desks instead of being on the floor
i would give it 4 out of 5 and 3 out of 5 for it helped me
it did help me now more about the learning intention
Reflection
Being the last lesson of the day, they were tired and talkative. As we were running out of time, I did allow the activity to continue when there were too many students talking or being distracting. To improve, I would be more patient, and wait for them to settle before moving forward. Articulate expectations again.
Possibly including lollies drove the students to be a bit more silly than they normally would have. I could easily see the students still being engaged without the lollies as they were able to physically be involved as well as the novelty factor.
For this group of students, including the extra language item: "Yang lebih cocok untuk saya..." was possibly too much information for them to take in one lesson. For an older group of students, this would not have been an issue.
Overall, I'm exhausted, but we all had fun learning today!
