Initially I tried to adjust the Year 7 program, as I thought the development level between these two would be small. I had lofty aspirations for those Year 6s! However I have realised that the key difference that was causing us to struggle to get through tasks was the level of contact time I have for each year. Also taking in account of extra interruptions such as Sports Carnivals!
Year 7s have Indonesian 5 times a fortnight, 45 minutes, and Year 6s have Indonesian 2 times a week 35 minute blocks. But when you really get down to how long Year 6s take to travel from their class to the room... make that 30, then cut down settling down, handing out their books and instructions... make that a 20 minute activity. Crazyyy!
I changed the second semester, and stretched the topic to two terms, rather than fitting one topic per term, and students are retaining their knowledge this term on a different level. They're able to communicate using language they have learned, and I have had more time to provide challenging tasks to those with higher ability.
