I have been telling Si Kancil & Buaya story, which I adapted from Bu Cathy. You can see the story below, and use it as you please.
As far as retention goes, students were far more capable of producing the language when prompted with visual gestures, and the value of actual language output is happening! But when I tell the story, I'm still not able to pull in ALL the students while we are telling the story. I have to think about the way I'm asking questions. Is it too fast...?
There's a small number of kids who remain unconvinced that it will help them to do the actions, while some other kids who were, I'd say... engaged 5/10... are now 100% engaged. They enjoy the fact that they can start manipulating the words to make new sentences and stories, particularly the bright kids are feeling really challenged. I can see those kinetic kids really absorbing the information much quicker than before.
Below is some examples of my assessment and the variety ability of students in completing the task. A weakness of this assessment is that students could guess what was happening from context, because of what we had learned in the past few weeks. I should have varied some these sentences more and replaced with some unknown information for students. One thing it does show is that all students are able to pinpoint key words and identify the gist of meaning in the sentences. As you can see most students were very able to achieve something, which is also a bonus!
I'm interested to see how much they retain by the end of the holidays next term!
Ada satu kancil.
Ada satu buaya.
Kancil ada empat kaki.
Buaya ada satu kepala.
Kancil lapar.
Kancil mau makan.
Kancil lihat apel.
Kancil lihat apel di belakang sungai.
Kancil mau makan apel.
Mangga di atas apel. Pohon di belakang sungai.
Buaya lapar.
Buaya mau makan.
Buaya lihat kancil.
Buaya mau makan kancil.
Aduh!
Kancil ada ide.
Kancil berkata, “Halo buaya! Ada berapa buaya di dalam sungai?”
Buaya berkata, “Saya tidak tahu!”
Kancil berkata, “Saya mau tahu. Buaya, antri.”
Buaya berkata “Saya tidak mau!”
Kancil berkata: “Saya ada hadiah!”
Buaya berkata: “HADIAH! Bagus!!! Buaya-buaya, antri!”
Buaya antri.
Kancil melompat di atas buaya.
Kancil makan apel.
Buaya berkata: “Di mana hadiah saya?”
Kancil: “Tidak ada!”
Buaya marah! Kancil senang.
