Sometimes, I am just here to share a useful link with a game I have tried and tested.
This is is a game from Fluentu that I tried with Year 7s in the topic of Kenalkan (Introducing yourself). The instructions are quite clearly written on the website, so please have a look. Below is my reflection on how it went down in real life.
Reflection
The first time I did this, I did as a big class and students were sitting at their desks with a sepak takraw ball. That was a mistake! The kids loved the activity, but chaos ensued as the ball was bouncing off the walls into people's faces. It was too hard an object to be throwing around in class. The second time round instead of balls I use a stuffed orangutan and gibbon monkey which is passed around in circles. Less likely to cause a face splat and injury, and the kids love having a reason to play with it.
I played "Yogya Love Story" song which is a still a favourite of mine and the kids. It's the perfect combination of modern combined with showcasing the best of traditional Indonesia. We also had an opportunity to talk through all the imaginary and awesome places you can visit in Yogyakarta. I always tell them about the amazing Chicken Church (Gereja Ayam) which is the weirdest coolest building I've ever seen in Indonesia.
In this particular time I played this activity, I scaffolded it for practice and have the questions on the board, so students can feel confident as they are speaking with the class. I did try it without scaffolding, but students who were weak were embarrassed to talk, so it was better to have it scaffolded it on the board and have 100% participation rather than 30% participation.
Overall, I rate this activity quite highly because it's low prep, high impact. It gets kids practicing their speaking in a safe way. They love the interactive element, they get some cultural learning from it as well.
