The integration of it into my program is very useful, but at the same time can be overwhelming, so I have taken it at my own pace to what degree I have integrated it into my program.
Wishes & improvements
- There is a language switch for popular languages, such as French, Spanish (Understandable as it is US based.), however there is work to be done on making Asian language versions (except they now have Chinese!).
How I have used it this year
1. Submitting Work
This year, my students have submitted any computer work they do on Edmodo, even if I am not grading the work. This also allows for accountability, and I can see if they have been using their time on their laptops wisely. I enjoy the fact that students can resubmit work several times, and so I can provide feedback - students edit their work, and submit again!
2. Pop Quizzes
Checking for understanding at any time; formative, diagnostic, etc. Students are able to undertake tests, and get instantaneous feedback.
3. Surveys
Qualitative surveys. I can read each individual student's response, and because I know who they are. I can understand them better as a learner.
4. Professional Learning
For my own learning and sharing of practice, it has been incredible to ask questions and seek knowledge from teachers around the world.
6. Badges
Useful for extrinsic motivation for students, easy to implement and free! It can be skill specific or task specific. Very useful in terms of any "gamification of learning".
Next Year
For example, I can embed a video into the quiz. Students may watch it as many times as they need, and then answer the questions beneath it. Teachers are able to set how many times a student may attempt a test, and whether or not one reveals the answers to the students instantly. As a LOTE teacher, these are very useful for training students in listening, reading and viewing comprehension.
I am planning to move from Edmodo over to Schoology, simply because of this. It will help me in developing more self access activities and cater more individually. Spending more time within class working with students individually.
