I remember learning at a WILTA workshop a few years ago, that children, particularly young children, need to see images of themselves in books, in order to build their self esteem. Kids need someone they can relate to. I remember this being fascinating, because it's not something that is often mentioned in a high school context. I also recall, being from a migrant family, having "huge teenage existential crises". It was not until I read "Chinese Cinderella", bizarrely enough (in no way is my life story tragic like Adeline Yen Mah), but it was through this book that I had my own culture explained to me, that helped me understand my own identity.
I think this translates to everyone, and diversity is incredibly important for the development of the human race. I also thought, my students need to see examples of people like themselves, "foreigners" who are successfully using a foreign language in their lives, so they know language can be learned and used at all different ages.
