The one I tried to day was "Tables" (Click to see original post). These are amended instructions taken from Danielle's Blog.
I used flashcard template of 5x5, and filled it with a mix of characters, Pinyin and English. Students were expected to translate or fill in the Pinyin or write the English meaning down in the space beneath it. I projected this onto the whiteboard.
Resources: Different coloured whiteboard markers, projector, vocabulary table.
1. Divide the class into 2-3 teams by "colour".
2. Give each student a number
3. Call out a number.
4. Students run up to the board, and fill in any information for ONE box.
5. Incorrect answers are rubbed off.
6. Team with most colours at the end win.
Attached is the table I used.
My variation was for Mandarin class, and it was REALLY useful for sight words and practicing sight words with PinYin spelling.
It worked incredibly well. It was multi-levelled and all students to achieve something at the end of the lesson. It allowed other students time to scan and work out answers they needed to answer something. It kept the students active, and was a good break from sit-down work. At times it was awkward when students accidentally stood in front of the projector, but because they had previous time to look at the board properly, they knew what answer they wanted to write anyway. As a reflection, I think also the trick was to keep momentum, to ensure there was less gap time for students to sit and pause in between turns.
